The Brahmaputra is longer but the Ganga has a much greater flow of water. It has many tributaries starting in the Himalayas whereas the Brahmaputra flows along a deep valley with few and small tributaries.

There are many other examples of shorter but more powerful rivers giving their names to the river after the confluence.

The Ganges has a greater volume of fresh water compared to the Brahmaputra. In India, The Ganga is regarded as holy and divine. It has a source in the Gangotri, Himalayas and is religiously sacred. Hence even the Brahmaputra loses its name to the Ganga after their confluence
