Credit card, ATM card and a normal amount of cash. Going to the UK is no more involved than visiting Canada or some other part of the US. The UK banking system is very advanced and integrated compared to the US, most ATMs are free and I have never had a problem using my ATM card there.

Travelers cheques are safer, but a commission is taken off when you use them. Many touristy places take them, such as hotels. I would bring both cash and travelers cheques (in pounds), using the TC's for expensive purchases and/or for lodging. Using cash for everything else. Also ATM's (often called "cash points" are everywhere. You can even request "cash back" on purchases using your debit cards at grocery stores. Most will not charge you extra, but really remote areas might. (Such as Iona, Scotland).

Take cash as you will be charged commision for cashing travellers cheques plus only a few establishments will accept them. Best thing to do is use your debit or credit card as they are accepted all over the UK. It is also commision free if using a debit or credit card.

Tc's are safe but a pain in the butt in some countries. Without a passport they will not cash and this is cumbersome.
I always carry cash and I am careful about guarding it. I also carry some TC's just in case I run out of cash and have to go thru the rigmarole.
I am speaking from Experience and after Travelling far and wide.

no it quite isn't any adventure for actual money or cheques. take it from me, you dont choose to be consistent with a card in yet another u . s . a . while the financial employer blocks your card in basic terms incase that's a fraudulant transaction. the financial employer will see transactions in south africa and block your card because it quite is unusual interest. TAKE money, DOTN in basic terms place self belief in the cardboard!
