Contact Toshiba with the model, part, and serial number of the machine.

They *may* be able to help you disable this password

Some of the older PC's all you had to do was to remove the battery on the motherboard for apeoximately 30 seconds

other machines have a jumper that will clear all user values in the EPROM

others you have to pull the EPROM IC (because the backup battery is soldered to the mother board.

Since you got it from a pawn shop there also is the possibility that it was stolen, so you could take it to the local police and see if they have a "computer forensics expert" on staff. He/she should also be able to help you, and can also keep you out of trouble it it turns out to be stolen.

Normally a pawn shop dealer would not buy a laptop that they knew wouldn't boot up, so it sounds like you might have something hot. -- just an opinion...

Good luck

Depending on what OS you are running you can bypass it through "SAFE MODE" Try pressing "F8" repeatedly when the laptop starts up. On the menu select "safe mode without networking" if it is windows XP. When the login screen pops up select the administrator profile. From there go into the users and change the passwords of the accts to something you will remember. Then restart the computer and try logging on.

By law, pawnshops are supposed to have the name and address of the former owner of the laptop. Try there first. If no luck then you may have to do a system restore. I hope you got the restore disks when you got the laptop. sometimes the lock might be BIOS enabled. If you can get inside you have to find out where the BIOS reset is.
