I guess they don't realize how ignorant they appear... nor do they seem to care.

I agree with you, but Yahoo Answers is not a place to judge someones ignorance merely because their spelling may be wrong, probably done in hurry, or probably they do not have the same English Language skills like you, or like me, or anyone else. I dont know how spell check is related to ignorance. Some people often do it in a hurry (For eg: I have typed ''because'' instead of cos', simply because I wanted to let you know it is not ignorance, but its just trying to be quick!).
These questions, like yours, keep coming on and on, and somehow people are so shallow that they only look ''how'' the answer or the question appears, and a quick judgement is made, that it is ignorance. But there's more to it. Like, what the question was, and what the answer is. The content, I mean. But then again, I agree with you, that when a question does not make any sense, is vulgur, or asked without punctuations, pauses, or whatever, it is so difficult to read or understand. That is the only time when I have found it so difficult to even respond. So just ignore. Thats it. Plain and simple. We do not have to really do an investigation on whether that particular person is ignorant, or stupid.
Yahoo answers is a fun place, and casual. I dont think we really need to use our literary skills, or grammar here.
P.s. I did my spell check, not because you said it, but to know for myself, if there is actually something wrong. And I do not know if there are mistakes here, but its taking an awfully long time. So I just clicked on 'submit'. I wouldnt spend time on it.

This is So true! Also, I can't believe how truly stupid (for lack of a better word ) many of the questions are. They seem to be from young kids .........there's very little Common Sense.

Most of the time ppl are just using slang or short cuts. A lot of teens use answers and they have a language of their own. It may appear ignorant to some but it makes sense to others.

Every time I have mentioned this when a question has particularly horrid spelling, the answer I have gotten has always been "What does my spelling have to do with it? I have four master's degrees and I'm working on my doctorate" (all spelled wrong, of course). What the heck? Isn't not being able to spell almost as bad as not being able to read?

Casual typing shouldn't determine intelligence or anything of the likes (when writing/typing for a job or a pisition, now thats different). Laziness doesn't associate with ignorants, looking for a way to type something shorter doesn't associate with ignorance. Representing "you" with 'u" is a good way to cut the word shorter, we do this with everything for benefits or advantages, from kitchen applicanes to using computers. I see no reason why to get angry or frustrated over this, we all do it, just in different ways. The only thing that matters is if we can understand it.

You can sum it up with one word: laziness. It could also be that they feel that they don't have the time to use it or that they don't realize that it is there. It might be that it is on the right intead of the left, making it less noticeable.

Correct spelling varies from one country to another. You've just spelt 'realise' wrong - but do I criticise? Of course not - I'm not that ignorant..!
; )
(Incidentally, ALL the words in this answer are spelt correctly in ENGLISH - including the word 'spelt'!)
