Most people will answer bipolar which can be correct. There are several different explanations for all of this. Look up dopamine if you're thinking bipolar. Might help. Mood swings are related to so many more things than manic depressants and bipolars. The could be schizophrenic, split personality, etc. Bi polar can be months on the highs of life and months on the lows. You may want to talk to the person to see if there is something or someone that is bothering them that couldve triggered it. These episodes of happy to upset that you refer to may come and go periodically, or daily. Is it a regular occurance? The nature vs nurture may help. Nature is more genetic makeup and prenatal where the nurture is environment. The environment is essentially anything however. This includes childhood, stress, work, school, diet, etc. Talk to the person and get a better idea of what you are looking at before you try to self diagnose your friend from Yahoo! answers responses.

It could easily be a bi-polar disorder as many above have stated.
The person doesn't realize their behavior isn't normal. In their mind they are acting in a completely rational manor! There is medication that can help but the bi-polar personality really struggles with the fact that they have to take a pill every day. They often skip a day, which becomes a week and more and then their erratic behavior causes them to loose jobs, family and every thing they normally hold dear! Allot of our homeless population is bi-polar.

I don't know how but I do it quite frequently! for me it's completely rational though. I'm happy, but then I remember something that I have to do or should be doing and it totally ruins the moment. even if I'm doing something fun I feel like the activity is wasting my time, preventing me from doing the things I have to do. then it just drags me down the more I think about it until my only concern is getting the heck out of there.

This defines a personality that is unstable in some way. The more stable personalities are "even tempered" and pretty much the same MOST of the time. If there are constant fluctuations between extremes, something is terribly WRONG. Good luck.

there are several possibilities this could be. One is a bi-polar (manic-depression), and then there are hormones, and diabetes can do that as well as many other medical conditions. I would check with a DR for more detailed information.
