Well, I don't think its bad to apologise for the wrongs of the past (and the slave trade was / is wrong: anybody argue with that?).
The problem I have would be about compensation. To whom exactly? And why only black people? Thousands and thousands of white people were effectively sold into slavery in Britain and shipped to places like Virginia and Barbados. It was called indentured servitude. So would we have to compensate some of the white descendants of these people living now in the Caribbean or poor white share-croppers of the southern USA?
The problem is if somehow people, mainly black but not necessarity only black, could be identified for compensation, where would it end? Next up would be the Irish for the effects of the Great Famine in the 1840s, and the Scots for the Highland Clearances. India and Pakistan would want a share. The Indian settlers on Fuji would be elegible.
Folks, the United Kingdom and the British Empire did extremely ugly things in the past, both to its own people and to the people of the world. For which, I personally am sorry. But can the world really expect us to pay for the sins of our ancestors?
No.

The British Government have no right to apologise. I'm sure we, as British people, are mostly very sorry it happened, but none of us were responsible for it. Plenty of other things the Government could be apologising about...

Apologise is the British version of say sorry. Grammatically both are impressive. It completely relies upon on your usa of residency. that's fairly unhappy that you've been criticized because both kinds are surely perfect.

This is ridiculous. If we are to busy apologising for things that happend years and years ago, how far back are we going to go? Should we all feel "sorrow" for adam and eve for not doing what they we told and bringing evil into this world?
Get over it please. We should be looking at action now to stop other acts of violence and injustice. Sudan is in a big mess now, so why go on about what happend 200 years ago?

Apology to whom? -they're long dead and gone now. That's just empty tokenism. We should however remember and try to learn from our mistakes past...
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat their mistakes (or WTTE)

The governments of the world got rich off black people and are still reaping the rewards and are still S.H.I.T.T.I N.G on black people today. I wouldn't fight against a muslim for these racists.
