Almost all older furnaces use what is called a thermopile, not to be confused with a thermocouple, that when it heats up it creates its own electric (24 volts) that it sends to the thermostat. When the thermostat "makes" the voltage is then sent to the gas valve thus opening the valve and creating heat. However these furnaces are gravity fed meaning they have no blower fan to push the heat into the house... If it has a fan it was added on later... This system is still used in space heaters but is no longer really used on a whole house heater... But to answer your question these furnaces were made by a lot of companies....
