If it does go off make sure they see you walking in. That way when you walk out and beep they won't think anything of it.

If you have an actual handheld tag remover, nothing would happen. you would just need to remove the sensor, dump the sensor somewhere in the store, and conceal the item. The only reason the sensor remover would set the alarm off is if it itself is sensored (some stores do that so you can't leave with it). Also, unbeknownst to many, not ALL sensors make the alarm go off. Some don't and they are just there to trick you or annoy you. And the ink tags can be removed with the same sensor remover. The troube you would run into is finding a tag remover :) And I know all this cause I work in retail. Metal has nothing to do with it.

the sensors in stores arent necessarily "metal detectors". Most can only sense a certain sensor inbedded in the device attached to the item. This is why the same detector can sense a clothing item with a visible tag on it, or a dvd with a hidden sensor inside. Sometimes, cell phones and those kids tennis shoes that blink can trigger them as well--but it's not metal that does it! Many stores also use the ink tags attached to the sensors that are made to burst with ink so that it renders the item ruined if tampered with.

Also, getting caught with a sensor remover in a store would be very bad! Security would be ALL over you--bad intent or not. I know Macy's would ask you to leave and even escort you out.

Get caught switching or removing tags and you'll be talking to Mr. Policeman. Don't even try it. Don't be stupid. Stores nowadays have very high security systems and they'll catch your assets and ship you off to the big house. Try explaining a shoplifting rap to some employer a few years from now...

I don't think so, but I wouldn't want to try it. I believe some retailers have tags that, if broken off, dispel an ink all over the place. Wow, how embarassing would that be?!
