Yes, they need to be stuck very tightly to the glass so the temp is transferred to the thermometer for a precise reading.

As you peel it off, the stickum is left stuck on the glass and the thermometer will not stick tightly after that. Taping it on doesn't work, take my word for it....

They are cheap, $1.39, just get another and have one on each tank.

I tried to do this, and it ripped my thermometer in half...I'd recommend getting one that's not the sticky kind, so you don't get stick stuff left on the outside. Mine did leave some so i just used some Windex and it came right off.

No, just make sure you do it gently, as to not take alot of the sensitive crystals that are on the sticky side.
