The producers are careful to keep switching the clues so that they could still live more or less anywhere.
For example, Carl was reading 'Cincinnati Time Wasting Rules and Regulations' at the plant in tonight's episode too.

The Simpsons live in Springfield. It's a ficticious city that's changed and adapted as the circumstances require it (the sorrounding ecosystem seems to change as well). It's a city that apparently has it's own version of almost everything you'll find in other U.S. cities. They even have a Springfield sign on the hills similar to the Hollywood sign.

Yeah...but there have been other hints in years past that say otherwise.

Matt Groening has said that Springfield is completely fictional and doesn't exist in any specific location. The location always seems to change depending on geographical features.

its in a lot of places only you morons would be so vain to think they live in Cali they (the writers) never give the exact place away they say something then contradict it with something else so they can keep it quiet if anyone gave it away that worked there supposing they knew in the first place they would loose there job you will know for sure if they ever do because it will be the end of the Simpson's

I'm pretty sure Springfield is not in California. But, the writers are probably based on L.A., so it's no coincidence it ended up in the show. I always thought Springfield was in Missouri, no?

Homer also says (in episodes past) that the grave he thought was his mother's was Walt Whitman's, who is buried in NJ...

There is no answer...the reason that the town is Springfield is that every state has a Springfield..

So no...it is not California...there is no right answer...its part of an on-running gag...

HAHAHAH
