it does this because it pulls out side air for it to use to help cool it off faster i own a repair shop, and this is one of the biggest complaints i get when it comes to smells inside of a car,but the only way to avoid this is try to use it on recycle when possible, and this way it will just keep using the air from inside of the vehicle,,good luck,i hope this help,s.

There are two different modes(usually) when dealing with automotive A/C. outside air and recycle. When your a/c is just on(not on MAX A/C) the recycle is open, allowing hte outside air to enter the HVAC system. When on MAX A/C, or with the Recycle function on, the door will be closed, keeping the not smoky air inside the car. If you still have a problem with smoke and such entering the vehicle, have a "cabin air filter" or "pollen filter" with a carbon element installed in your vehicle. The carbon should take the stink out of the air entering your car.

A car is not a vacuum chamber. You can't prevent outside air and particles from coming in. No matter where you set your AC.

because the A/C unit pulles outside air the cabin as its source. all the unit is doing is cooling the air coming in. if you have the vents turned to the "open" setting on the selector dial, it is running in that fashion. if you slide it to "recir(culate)", it just recirculates the air in the cabin.

Set it on recirculate, otherwise if pulls air in fro the outside.Thats why newer cars come equipped with incabin microfilters.

A/C doesn't filter out smoke from the environment. Check that what you smell isn't coming from a leak in your own exhaust. that could kill you.

the air flow going through the air conditioner has to come from someplace.........it comes from outside.

Duh, it's sucking in air from outside the car and cooling it, sending it then thru your vents.
