Hello, I am a member of an esoteric Order of Freemasons, American Co-Masonry: Freemasonry for women and men. I will speak about what it cost me.
First it cost me time and effort to apply. I had to fill out an application blank that I got through the mail and then wait. After that I had to go talk with three members of the Lodge. That took some driving since Co-Masonic Lodges are not just in every town (unlike the males only).
There was the cost for clothing. In our Lodges we wear all white suits (no, not robes and hoods!) and I did need to buy that. I also had to buy my apron (part of the apparel). The suit set me back about $300 or so. The apron was less than $50.
The year's dues is about $40.
After that, anything else I contribute is between me and my conscience (and my tax agent).
So, the first year cost me about $400. After that, I have not needed to buy a new suit (I did buy a new pair of trousers recently).
I drive about 800 miles a month to go to my two Blue Lodges I belong to. Most do not do that much driving. That adds up. I kick in for charity collections, too. But understand this, I am exceptionally blessed right now and I help with what I can.
If you wish to become a Freemason, no matter which Order you wish to join, you do need to be able to pay yearly dues (usually well under $100) and to buy a suit. That is usually all that is absolutely required. Fact is, I would bet that some of the Brethren in a Lodge would help out if you really needed it.
Freemasons, despite what you may have read, are not all rich. Some of us are teachers (me, for instance), some lawyers, some booksellers, some groom poodles, some are nannies (the head of one of my Lodges is one), some are tax accountants, some are Feng Shui consultants. We are bonded together to change the world by changing ourselves.
If I can be of more assistance, feel free to write me. For more information about Co-Masonry, click on the link below.

You should ask a mason of the lodge you are looking to join. They will give you the information you seek. I myself and looking to join the freemason where I live. Like they have said it cost is all different. You do have an starting fee, and then a membership fee. It really not to bad of a cost and it worth joining.

All you must do is petition a lodge for membership.
We have a saying in F.&.A.M. "if you want to know about Masons talk to one".

I know that you have to be sponsored by a current member and that you must have a clean criminal record....but that's it.
