I bought a Toshiba HDD/DVD Video Recorder RD-XS34 used on E-Bay (forgot how much) and I have been very happy with it.

This unit is vastly superior to a DVR because it has its own hard drive (can record approx. 150 hours before you run out of space) and you can dub from the hard drive to a DVD. You can also select scheduled programs to record directly to a DVD.

There is no subscription service (like TIVO) but the unit automatically downloads the TV listings from the existing cable or satellite service provider. There is also a nifty menu for selecting programs to record from the listings. I don't know if it can be attached to the Internet.

I have owned a Toshiba DVR but the problem I had was that the re-writable disks wear out over time and they are difficult and expensive to replace.
