I was thinking of buying one for my mother as a christmas gift, but I'm skeptical. Do they actually work as well as a regular vacuum? What about pet hair? Do you have to empty it constantly?

Are they loud? Do they make noise at all? There are several models- which is best?

I own a Roomba, which I have had for about three years now. They do work well, and I use mine as a backup for my regular vacuuming. I have a dog and four cats. so I do have to use an uptight vacumn about one per week due to all the shedding.

The Roomba works great as a touch up vacumn, in my case. If I did not have pets, it would definitely be my first choice as a vacumn. I work with a lot of disabled people, who swear by the Roomba.

On those days that you just are too tired after work to vacumn, but your floors are a bit messy, it can be a special treat to watch the Roomba spinning around the floor and getting one of those ever-ongoing household chores done for you.

They do have a smaller dirt collection chamber than average vacuums, I have to empty mine once it has completed two or three rooms, depending on the degree of dirt. It only takes a few seconds, to remove the collection chamber, empty it and replace it; so your Mom would not have a problem emptying it at all.

If you do decide to purchase one for your Mom for a Christmas gift, make sure that she leaves it on the charger for the recommended amount of time before the first use, or it will not remained charged correctly. The initial charging takes a longer amount of time than subsequent ones.

It is a lot of fun to be working on other household chores while the Roomba is working away. It is even more fun to be sitting reading a book or watching a movie while the Roomba is working away. Have a good night.

If that's the kind that goes around cleaning on its own, yes, I've seen them work at a friend's house. She has 2 large dogs, and when they aren't trying to attack it, the little cleaner picks up quite a bit of hair and dust. And it is pretty cool watching this little thing spin around and go on its own cleaning while you can sit and watch TV. Even if they didn't work that well, I'd still get one for the entertainment value. I don't think that they have a mind of their own because if they did, they'd be plotting to take over the house, not clean it. They're like something off the Jetsons. But they do work, and I would gladly accept one as a gift. Which reminds me, my friend said that she was going to buy me one...
