the quadratic formula solves every quadratic equation. just plug in the coefficients and simplify. but in such a simple case as the one you give, it is much quicker to factor:
(a-3)(a-4)=0
a=3
a=4

a = {7 +/- sqrt{49-48}} / 2

a = 3 and 4
