Lake Superior or Lake Baikal. I think the first is the biggest, and the second the deepest.

Edit: No, I was not quite right. According to About/

"A lake any body of water surrounded by land and very large lakes are sometimes called seas. The world's largest lake is the salty Caspian Sea at 143,200 square miles (370,886 km2). The Caspian Sea is surrounded by Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan.

The world's second largest lake, and the world's largest freshwater lake is North America's Lake Superior at 31,700 mi2 (82,103 km2)." But Wikipedia disagrees with About, stating that Lake Baikal is both the largest freshwater lake and the deepest.

Lake Superior

What do you mean by 'big'? If you are asking about volume, the answer is most definitey Baikal. If you are asking about surface area, then probably Superior. As for the Caspian Sea, there has been much debate over whether that is indeed a sea, or a lake.. I forget what all the rationale are.

Look at it this way - One fifth (ie 20%) of the world's fresh lakewater is in Baikal - seriously, it is incredibly deep. I'd settle with Baikal as the true gold-medalist of lakes :)
