I didn't say ALL Blacks/Africans have coarse/kinky hair. But many of us do.

Hello?!?! I'm black too! Don't you get it? See? I'm saying, "us" and "our" here?

But thanks Nicole! You're soooo right! Great answer!

A lot of people here are so hell-bent on making sure people don't think they have kinky hair that they have not answered your question. I hear what you're saying, and some non-black people have kinky hair-- a lot of jewish people, some latinos, and even a few so-called "white" people. There are also Africans (from Africa) who DON'T have kinky hair. However, tightly coiled hair is largely unique to Africans and people of African descent. 'Kinky hair genes' (for lack of a better way to put it) tend to combine with hair genes of other types and produce a looser curl.

Hope that helps!

We are awesome, its even in the Bible. We are Yahweh's first chosen people. Individual strands of hair is like a spring, if you pull it, it will spring back, sometimes even into a circle(coil). Its really cool. Both its chemical and physical characteristics are complex and super cool. Our hair grows up to the glory of God. Nobody else has this. Truly a germ, so many hair style can be achieved with this texture. The black hair is quite alive.:}
Bottom line is the kind of follicle you have determines the physical appearance, and the chemical bonds of the protein determines how it bends, eg:less bonds results in straighter hair. All hairs are the same by the way. If you take a coily hair and straighten it, next to a straight hair there is no biological difference.

I don't have kinky hair, as a matter of fact I have fine hair whether is was relaxed or not. There are some ricans w/ coarse hair. We are who we are because that's the way God created us, same reason theres the sterotype that most white people have flat behinds, long noses and pale skin and I've noticed lately that a lot of them are reconstructing there lips and other body parts to resemble that stereotype that us blacks have, I know some whites who even buy lip plumping lipstick. Oh yeah, there's a lot of whites who get tans to obtain deeper skin tones than which they have naturally. So I guess we are who we are and IT IS WHAT IT IS. So Love who and what you are and that way no one has any self esteem problems, I know I don't, I'm perfectly made.........

I agree with Nicole.

Black people have many variations.

As for me, I don't have good hair, but I have long relaxed hair.

My cousins, however, have fine hair.

There are other races that do have kinky hair.

I actually know a white person with kinky hair( no lie) and a jet black woman with long wavy( "good") hair.

The typical hair and hair follicles of those of African descent are tightly curled, thus producing hair that spirals. Black hair also typically has a larger diameter than Caucasian hair and retains less water, thus its relative “kinkiness.”

I've seen Latin, Italian, Arabic, and Jewish people with kinky hair. I have also seen some white people with kinky hair. I had a close white friend with really kinky hair and she let me relax it, it was so pretty that she was hooked! But when their hair is nappy they like to call it "Frizzy."

People who are into race would call me white but actually I have no clue to who my ancestors were. I could be a blend of everything and anything. If I could choose my race I would want to be not of this world. My hair is very short because I cut it myself to save money. Brown on top and gray on the sides. Age 54, male

Because God made us different, blacks do have hair that dries really fast and is uber curly. I am a white person who has course curly hair also, lineage from Spain w/ Jewish heritage. I believe it is in our genes or mutations, but yes, blacks do predominately have the kink hair....
