Do I still need a router for just a home pc and a laptop please help ?

An Ethernet jack can be used if you plan to network two computers.
a router is necessary for sharing an Internet connection

if you want to connect them over lan then you need a router. i don't think you can direct connect with just an ethernet cable. they don't really work that way.
the other solution is to connect via firewire or usb.

wrong wire you dont use lan wires for direct connection go back to teh pc shop and get the correct connection
