I have about 3 acres of topsoiled ground to plant, It doesn't have to be perfect but I would like some nice thick hearty grass to grow. It is a sizeable investment so I want it to grow. So far I know that firm ground is the secret, I have found that letting the rain pound down the soil works pretty well to firm it up. I am in Ontario Canada (Barrie). What type of seed for growth/thickness vs. cost is recommended, where does one get a good deal on bulk, when do I plant, and is it ok to spread the seed and then sort of drag a piece of fence over the see to work it in or should I just leae it laying on top? I can not water it, I can wait until the fall if that is better than spring, I just want a good yield.

Go to your local garden center to find out what kind of grass for your area. Read directions on the bag.. Cover it with straw, and keep it well watered. I had 20 dump trucks of dirt leveled in my yard. I used the recommended grass seed for the area. I did follow the instructions I gave you. I now have a beautiful lawn. Only about 1 acre, it took about 50 to 75 lbs of seed.

P.S. fall is a good time to plant.

THE BEST TIME TO PLANT YOUR LAWN AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WATERING IT IS IS THE FALL. BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THAT THERE IS USUALLY ALOT OF SNOW IN BARRIE, AS THE SNOW MELTS THROUGH OUT THE WINTER IT WILL WATER YOUR LAWN FOR YOU AND THIS WILL GIVE IT A GOOD START. THEN IN THE SPRING YOU USUALLY HAVE ENOUGH RAIN UP THERE TO GIVE IT A REAL BOOST.I WOULD GET A PASTER MIX OF SEED IT HAS ALOT OF COLVER IN AND DOES NOT REQUIRE AS MUCH WATERING. YOU CAN BUY THIS IN BULK AT YOU LOCAL FEED WEAR HOUSE.IF YOU HAVE SOME WERE YOU CAN PURCHASE CHEAP STRAW i WOULD PUT THIS ON THE SEED AFTER YOU HAVE PLANTED IT YOU DON'T SPREAD IT ON TO THICK VERY LIGHTLY OVER THE SEED. I THINK ABOUT 3 BALES OUGHT TO DO IT. THIS HELPS KEEP THE MOISTER IN AND THE BIRDS AWAY FROM THE SEEDS UNTIL THEY GET ESTABLISHED.AS THE SEEDS GROW THE STRAW JUST SEEMS TO DISAPPEAR INTO THE GRASS AND WHEN YOU ARE READY TO MOW THE LAWN IT MAKES FOR A GREAT MULCH. I WOULD LET THE LAWN GROW A GOOD 3-5" BEFORE YOU DO THE FIRST CUT..I WOULD DRAG THE FENCE ON THE GROUND BEFORE YOU PLANT OR RAKE IT BUT THE FENCE THING IS A GOOD IDEA, THEN JUST SPRINKLE THE SEED ON TOP YOU CAN BUY A HAND HELD SPRINKLER PROBABLY WHERE YOU BUY THE SEED IT WILL MAKE FOR MORE EVEN DISTRIBUTION.......THAT'S IT ..........GOOD LUCK

Why would you want a 3-acre lawn? I have a standard-size lot and I put down landscape fabric and covered all the grass with decorative stone! Now I don't have to bother with grass ever again, and I already have all these hobbies lined up to do as I watch my neighbours lawn-mowing. Sorry, I definitely don't share your interest in maintaining grass! Why don't you grow a cash crop, or plant a small orchard? Or even build a chicken coop and produce eggs? Or even rabbits? But 3 acres of lawn? I'd rather move into an apartment than maintain that! Never!

Call your local extension agency and have them evaluate a sample of your soil and they will tell you how to do your lawn in the correct way for your area and soil type. You can sow your seed and fertilize in the spring and in the fall. They will lead you in the right direction and help you out free of charge. You can also got to many websites and study lawns. I do this every so often and lawns and plants also. There's always something to be learned each time you open and read a web page. Good Luck

Check to see if there is anyone in your area that does hydro-seeding. It's what Department of Highways in most provinces and municipalities use for a quick, efficient and effective way to get a nice 'turf'.
They spray a mixture of water, hay, grass-seed and a sticky emulsifier onto the prepared surface. the mixture adheres to the ground and the seed doesn't wash or blow away as much before getting rooted.
It gives excellent results but I'm not sure of costs. Check with your DHO office in Barry.
Good luck !

it really is problematical to say. it really is amazingly attainable that it's going to develop decrease back. The roots are fairly huge and deep in hydrangeas, so i'd say probable it is going to. even as i purchased my abode there have been huge hydrangeas out the front overgrown. I pulled all of them out, and began planting different issues. We had neglected different root, and it grew decrease back. so long because the inspiration is in tact, it really is going to be high quality.
