what is the difference between cutlass and monte carlo?

well i was going to buy a cutlass but i saw a monte carlo that looked just like it so what is the difference

They had different drivetrains. These cars were built before the 350 and 305 chevy were the engines used in all rwd GM vehicles. Chances are that the monte has a 305 chevy engine, and the olds has a 307. The 307 is a fine engine, although it is heavier. The transmissions behind the engines are similar, other than having different bolt patterns to bolt to the different engines. The bodies are similar between the two cars, but not exactly the same. The interiors are also slightly different, although some pieces will interchange. As far as parts availability, the monte will probably be a little easier to get parts for, but the olds won't be too bad either. I am only guessing that the models you are talking about are from the 80's some time. If that's the case, be sure to check out the rear frame rails above the axle, since they have a tendency to rust out.

Fist off, with regards to a previous answer, You are not comparing a Chev to a Pontiac. Instead we are talking about Chevrolet's Monte Carlo and Oldsmobile's Cutlass.

In the overall scheme of things either one will make for a good basic commuter and grocery getter. But if you are looking at models from back in the early 70's to have as a specialty or collector ride you should do your homework and decide which one most closely meets your tastes. And it's a tough chioce between these two classics.

I'm amazed by some of the answers here. Some people still don't realize that GM takes a "chassis platform" ,changes the cosmetics and a sway bar, and a different motor option and creates a car for a different GM division! Thats it! No different ashtray,no different cruise control knob,etc...
Examples are:Chevy/GMC trucks,Monte Carlo/Cutlass/Grand Prix,Cavalier/Sunbird,Firebird/Camaro,Escalade/Yukon,etc...
Ford/Mercury(keyword"division of Ford") do the same thing!
Auto makers would go broke trying to figure out completely different cars for each division!

in the '70s chevrolet was enjoying success with its malibu nameplate.olds countered with the cutlass, buick enjoyed the regal.there was another clash of model titans.the impala/caprice vs the bonneville/catalina vs lesabre/electra and the olds 88/98.the monte carlo only had the grandprix as its wannabe copycat.after the border war with the gm hatfields vs the mccoys the montecarlo maintained abit of its flairside styling while the grand prix took on its bubble shape it enjoys today.the cutlass went its merry way too

I like the regal better in my opinion, but the interior and drivetrain will be the difference along with the front are rear clips. Also the GM intermediate cars/G body cars had different bracing on the frame and body which allow the cars to ride and handle differently, to flex and tighten up at certain parts on the frame. The type (trim level) of regal or monte will mean different parts - like power steering ratios, tranny/engine/rear, suspension, etc

Pontiac and Chevy. They are both made by General Motors, but different brands of cars. The ash tray might be 1/8th inch to the left in the cutlass, but 1/8th to the right in the monty.
