I think he died. It makes the most sense, but Rowling's was stupid to use time travel in her books. This leaves it open for them to go back and save him. I don't think they will, but they did in the 3rd book.
The way it played out with Snape killing him and him being old with the bad hand and drinking the poison, I THINK HE IS DEAD.
I enjoy the books but I fear she will catch George Lucusitis and over think and turn a great series into a poor ending.
If she kills ginny George Fred or Ron weasley, harry or Hermine it will be a bad ending.( although killing Harry closes the series fromothers making more books)
Nevile making his grandmother happy by dying a hero is fine.(possible)
Snape and Malfoy becoming good guys is fine.(I expect this)
Hagred dying is OK as well, but I doubt he will.

I read an interview with J. K. Rowling in which she herself said he was dead. I hated to hear that! I think if you go to one of the Harry Potter fan sites you might be able to read the text of the interview if you are interested. I'm afraid I can't remember exactly when it was - I think this summer. However, if we are going to continue the Harry Potter speculation, I think that Snape is a double or triple agent and is reluctantly on Harry's side because he didn't kill Harry when he had the chance. Have fun speculating!

I think that maybe what happened to Dumbledore is the cliffhanger, what's going to make people read the next book/see the next movie. The whole point was for us readers NOT to know for sure.
It is strange though, to say he's dead, because he's such an intricute part of the story line...if he goes, then who's there to back Harry? DEFINATELY would make it an interesting twist on J.K. Rowling's side. Most author's wouldn't be bold enough to kill off a main charactor like that. Then again, I heard she was forced to write the fifth book anyway, and maybe (if he is really dead) she did it so as to not have to write any more Harry Potter books?

Dumbledore is, unfortunately, very dead. He might, however, have deicded he had to die. Snape made the unbreakable vow saying he'd help kill Dumbledore. He and Dumbledore might have decided that if it ever came down to it, Snape would kill Dumbledore. Snape, with his role as a spy, could still be valuable to the Order, while Dumbledore, who has told Harry everything he knows, is less useful. Snape might still be good...you never know.

Yes, Dumbledore is really dead. Not even the wizards can bring him back - if they could, why didn't they bring back Harry's Parents, Cedrick, and Sirus?

Dumbledore is dead. JKR confirmed it.
Though, I think the question that then remains is.. is Snape on the side of Voldemort or not? Its very hard to tell.

the greatest headmaster in the history of hogwarts, dies by falling off of a building and could not do anything to save himself.
furthermore why would he have needed to run from Serverus Snape. i think that it is a story plot twist and that it will become more clear in the last book.
