It really depends on the doctor and your personal health I think. My midwife told me that she would not induce me unless required for a medical reason *ie complications way late etc* as it was my first baby. She felt that first babies usually take longer and are late so unless I got around a week past or began to have problems we should just let it go. The day before my due date I was sent to the hospital for high blood pressure and a horrible headache. Was sent home with the instructions to stay off my feet and that if labor didn't start by the end of the weekend (5 days after due date) they would induce me just to be safe. Went into labor sat night and my daughter was born sunday afternoon. Another thing to bear in mind is like the other person said due dates are fudged. I dont have regular periods and wasn't exactly sure when I noticed something funny with my stomach *morning sickness was how I knew* so the due date was based on the approximate size of the baby at that first ultrasound. So your due date might be a little off. Also to mention I was dilated 4 at my last appt before I gave birth (was when they sent me to the hospital) and apparently that didn't really mean anything : ) Hope this eases your worries some.

Listen, i have been there twice..i am 24 with two children..both i carried post due date. I was just honest with my doctor and i said "i would like to be induced" ..they will compromise with you if you are really uncomfortable, but girl..i promise you this much..being induced really sucks!!!! With my son, i was induced and it didnt work, they took the pitocin out to let me sleep and they said they would try in the morning because i wasnt kicking into labor at that point. The morning came and before they could chemically induce me i went natural and it was so much more comfortable. When you are induced they are CHEMICAL and SYNTHETIC contractions, far stronger and more painful that most real ones..they are controlled by meds that MAKE you have contraciton and they also control how intense it is..I know you are anxious, what mom isnt at your stage, but give it a couple days...and good luck...! congrads! hold off if possible, and i know you wont listen to me, but it WILL happen, so please take my advice, wait until your body does the job because that inducment realllllllllly hurts!!!
Oh and if you want to look it up.. Pitocin is "usually" what they use to give your body contractions along with a little somthing they put "up there" to make you dialate ..which i believe is called Cirvadil ...check up on google it will correct any spelling errors. :)

You don't have to be dilated to be induced. It helps your labor to go faster if you start out dilated more but isn't always necessary. When I was induced 11 years ago I was only 2 centimeters dilated. It is my understanding that they don't like to let people go more then two weeks over their due date. Good Luck!

Usually yes. I know with me I was at a 2 for 3 weeks before they induced me. And I was 42 weeks along when they did it. Talk about a long pregnancy. Try having sex. It will help you to thin more and dilate more... maybe even go into labor on your own.

It's called informed consent, which means you need to make an informed decision based on your health and the health of your baby.

However, it cracks me up that North American doctors do not know the difference between post-dates (after you due date) and post term (after 42 or 43 weeks depending on where you are). Once upon a time due dates were always plus or minus 2 weeks, even most early ultrasounds are plus or mins 7-10 days and babies aren't all ready at the exact same time anyway (Do we walk at the same time? Cut teeth at the same time? etc etc)

it really doesnt matter on how far dialated you are it all depends on the baby really. they will most likely induce you at your next app. if you dont have the baby before then. i was 43 weeks prego and dialated to 2cm and then they finally induced me that day cause i was so far along but good luck to you and i hope you have a good healthy baby!!

Yes they should... I was only 38 weeks along and completely effaced but not dialated.. I would speak with your doctor.... because most don"t like to let the pregnancy go past 41 weeks.. congrats and good luck.......

it depends on the doctor. I was induced with my first one and wasn't dialated at all! I was 40 weeks and 2 days also...My doc was gonna make me wait 2 weeks but I asked him if we could do it sooner and he said yes!
