for the first three months of pregnancy your diet does not need anything extra except to be a normal healthy diet
for your last two trimesters you need an additional 300 calories a day or so in addition to a normal healthy diet

if you would like to use the exchange system this would be a typical healthy diet for pregnancy
9 servings whole grains
3 servings fruit
4 servings vegetables
2 servings meat (low fat)
3 servings milk (low fat)
fats as needed to provide calories

vitamin supplements are not needed unless you have a deficiency

food should be salted to taste (don't restrict your salt intake)

water intake should be 64oz minimum (that's 8 measuring cups)

caffeine should be less than 500mg a day

you should not use any sugar substitutes or olestra (fat substitute)

if you want help planning a diet you are welcome to email me I am a nutritionist

I would like to comment on two suggestions listed below, one is
Brewer's Diet which is nutritionally incomplete and I recommend to No one but especially not a pregnant women, the other is the diet given in what to expect when your expecting, this also is a poor diet, in fact much of the information in the book what to expect while your expecting is outdated or just incorrect.

I'm glad to see someone who recognizes the importance of a good, nutritious diet for pregnancy.

The Brewer diet for pregnancy is excellent. If you go to this web page you can find some information, including a sample daily diet (pretty simple and lots of choices) for pregnancy that you can print out, and a weekly checklist if that is helpful. Assuming your current diet is healthy and adequate you don't need a whole lot extra up until about 20 weeks. Just make sure you are taking a good multi vitamin with extra folic acid. Chlorophyll is an excellent "vitamin" source. Most women need a calcium/magnesium supplement during the second half of pregnancy.

i see someone rated this question as being a bad one. why would you diet while you're pregnant they ask...simple because if your clinic is like mine, your doctor will send you to a nutritionist. your nutritionist will put you on a diet...are suppose to gain only so much weight during pregnancy. some ppl think you are just suppose to gain weight cause you're eating for two. thats true....BUT, you are suppose to gain weight eating the right stuff. so its not a diet diet, you wont lose weight...you're suppose to gain a 4 pounds a month if you actually stick to the diet. and sure you can have some grease and sweets every once in a while....just get all your nutrients first. :) contact me if you want to know some more :)

love jen.

ps. you dont need a book of "sample pregnancy diets" you need to see a nutrionist, so you can get straight answers.

You most definitely should NOT diet while pregnant! However, just because you are "eating for two" doesn't mean that you should literally eat for two. There's a pretty decent book out there called, "What to Expect When You're Expecting." This book has a sample of the "pregnancy diet" in it...the same authors of that book came out with a "What to Eat When You're Expecting."

Just remember to make healthy choices and don't always go running to junk food. Eat more fruits and veggies and drinks lots and lots of water.

The best and ONLY diet for a pregnant woman is this:
Low sugar/salt,
High vegetable,
High fruit/fiber,
Low saturated or trans-fat
High calcium
Anything else depletes your child's nutrition and his/her brain and body won't grow properly. It's a lot easier to lose weight after giving birth than it is raising a menatlly or physically challanged child for decades.

just eat a lot of healthy food, just cause ur pregnant doesnt mean that u should eat junk food. pig out sometimes but just think the better foods u do eat the baby gets all the nutrients from the food. lots of grainy bread, fruit , cereals, milk , juice, lean meat. rice, pasta those types of foods good luck.

Get the book "What to eat when you're expecting" by Eisenberg, Murkoff, and Hathaway (the Authors of "What to eat when you are expecting"). It is published by Workman Publishing. You should be able to find it at Target or at Borders books. Of course, ask your O.B. or midwife for more suggestions.
