Yes, he's dead. I don't think J. K. Rowling would intentionally mislead us, or Harry, with such a important change in the stories. Why shouldn't Professor McGonagall have a important role in finishing training Harry? She is, after all, possibly the one teacher at Hogwarts who will continue to look out for him.

I think he's gone for good but he would make a reappearance in the 7 book.

I do think he's dead, because JKR said she cried after writing his death. I just doubt she'd cry if she was writing a fake death.
I felt so silly though, because I cried reading his death-- I was so said. He was my favourite character!
