I talk to my dogs sometimes (not oddly, when I come home I jut greet them and stuff cause I love them). I realize that they don't talk back, but is it at all positive for me to talk to them? Does it help us interact better?

Yup- esp social animals. The tone is the most important thing. You can call them idiots in a happy perky voice, and your dog will love you for it. I use my tone of voice with horses all the time. Calm and praising- they relax, Sharp- they will be shaking and very attentive. I use sarcastic when my horse is starting to spook- no one wants to be called an idiot in a sarcastic tone- she quits spooking.
People may look at you wierd (esp not animal lovers) but it really does help. I had to babysit captive wolves during nearby construction. They would pace around and hate the noise. I got a book and read outloud to them- they all stopped and came over to listen and started ignoring the construction.
It really does help.

Absolutely talk to them! Try to get them to understand what you are saying, just like a child. My puppy knows what I am talking about but she is an only child. I speak to her just like a child she understands what I want and goes along with what I am saying. She is quite bright. It is more difficult with more than one, I think. Eris even talks back. She speaks with sounds that are more than 2 or 3 syllables. She can really get communicative. Surely the equate the word cookie or treat with their treats? They know what going out side means. Dogs are smart.

Absolutely! I talk to my dogs a lot. They do understand most of what I say and there are certain things that set them off in spasms of happiness, like when I say "Do you want a treat?" "Lets go to the Dog Park" "Want to go for a ride?" "Who wants Ice-Cream?" They know exactly what each of these things mean. They also understand commands. They may not understand every word you are saying to them but they understand the emotion. Definitely talk to your dogs!

Dogs will not only respond to your voice mood but actually can learn several words or phrases. Not like you or I learn a language but just watch Pet Star, Animal Planet or other animal oriented shows and see just how smart pets can be. They can really be our best friends.

Absolutely... When I ask my oldest cat "what?", he usually tells me by leading me to the sink or his food dish, never the litter box though... Also when in a bad situation like the vet their panic always subsides with me saying "its OK". My youngest will sing old MacDonald had a farm with me. With a meow meow here and a meow meow there... Only one problem with her playing the animals my farm only has cats! Were working on cow!

I talk to my dogs too. I find it to be very therapeutic to myself and they love the attention. I don't know if they truly understand the words but they understand the tone of my voice and the emotions I have for them. When I'm upset they gather around and comfort me. When I'm happy they play, and when I'm angry they high tail it out of there. :)

I talk to all my animals and they all reply to me in their own ways. i talk to my horse and if i say he sticks he turns his head away and looks angry if i tell my dog she sticks she looks sad and walks away. if i say the word "walk" to my dog she goes insaine with happiness and statrs barking with excitment and wont stop till we get outside. my cat knows the word food very well. and all my animals know when i say good boy or good girl i mean it.
I love my animals.
the more u talk to them the more they love u back.

Absolutely! They are very intelligent creatures, and when you talk to them, they know it! They can tell by the tone of your voice how you're feeling.
