First: hibernation simply takes all the stuff from your RAM (RAM get's erased every shutdown/restart) and puts it on your hard drive. So when you turn it back on, all Windows has to do is put the stuff back in RAM -- speeding up the turning on process + leaves your desktop almost exactly the way you left it.
I think if your not going to be using it for a few hours, turn it off. Especially at night. The fans are constantly sucking in fresh air and DUST into your computer getting into all the nooks and crannies. Plus it saves the environment too by not wasting more electricity.
It's also a good idea to start fresh everyday to keep Windows optimal, so don't hibernate everyday.
Anyway the dust will eventually clog important areas, overheating and damaging the vital components. Also I agree that anything that spins will cease much quicker. Your fans (theres on your power supply, cpu, general fan) and hard drive both spin, usually constantly.

if you are not using it, it is always good to turn it off cause even though you are not using it, it still is constantly using the harddrive which will eventually die out. and mostly if it is hooked up to the internet, you are leaving your computer wide open to the world to hack into. the only difference between heibernate and shutdown is that when you boot up from heibernate, it turns up in the same fashion the way you shut it down, for instance if you have a word file open, its gonna come up with the same file up and shut down means the entire system shuts down and you will have to re open all the programs.

Mine stays on...it does not hurt it. It's better on the power supply too. Just make sure your fans stay clean and go into your power options in control panel and make sure your harddrive winds down after a certain time and your monitor shuts off.....Hibernate usually causes more problems with freezing up..easier to go into power options

Either, it is of course more energy efficient to turn it off, but some people never do. For example, my computer-- never turns off. I always forget... Many people leave unreliable computers on all the time, so that they don't have to worry about it not coming back up.
But, either way, your computer won't care.

leaving an electrical appliance on for a very long periods of time has always been a bad idea. you're not only wasting electricity but slowly damaging your computer. Your pc, especially the monitor generates heat and if left for a long period of time will accumulate and damage your monitor. If you're not using it try putting it in standby mode. you'll save energy and your pc.
