The ratio has changed over the centuries of its use, and can be altered somewhat depending on the purpose of the powder.

Difference between black powder and current gun powders.
Black powder was discovered by the Chinese and oddly enough European monk with no connection. Ingredients; Charcoal, sulfur and salt peter.

Black powder contains carbon (charcoal), sulfur, and potassium nitrate. Smokeless powder contains nitrocellulose and possibly other nitrates.
