If the C drive is reformatted, how does the different parts of the computer talk to each other? Like how does the CD drive tell the screen what to put on it if there isn't any windows? How does the CD drive work if there isn't any windows??? Please clarify what happens after you reformat the C drive.

The BIOS contains instructions that will operate the computer at a low level. The BIOS will display setup information and accept keyboard (to change BIOS settings) input even without an operating system installed. Most users can access the BIOS by pressing the Delete key during the bootup process.

You asked about how the computer CD drive would work if "there isn't any windows". Without an operating system, the computer will have limited capabilities. The BIOS can be instructed to boot from a variety of sources. The typical boot sequence will be: hard drive, CD drive, floppy drive. The "boot sequence" simply tells the computer wich device to boot from and in which order.

If you don't have an operating system on the C drive, then the computer will probably try to boot from the CD drive. If you have a Windows installation disk in the CD drive, the computer will follow the instructions contained on that CD.

Most CD drives will allow the BIOS to "boot" the computer from the CD (in the absence of a Drive C). However, if you have a CD drive that does not permit this, you may have to load a "Driver" first before accessing the CD drive. This is where it gets tricky. You may have to boot from a Floppy that contains the necessary "Driver" to allow the BIOS to operate the CD drive. This is a rare situation. But it can occur. Make sure you purchase a good quality CD Drive and Hard Drive from reputable manufacturers.

If you are "reformatting" drive C, then you had better have a good Windows Installation CD and valid activation key. If you're missing the activation key, you can purchase one on-line through the Microsoft website.
