and I am confused. The Star Wars Trilogy set, why does it say 4,5,and 6 on the side? He also likes the old Star War's movies. What would be a good gift?

Thanks guys for answering, I still don't get it but I will go off of what you all are telling me. This is my ex, whom is still my best friend, his movies are still here so I am sure he doesn't have these. My first pick was Lord of the Rings set but he has them. Thank you again.

OK, here's the deal with the numbering on the side.

"Original Star Wars Trilogy" (the ones with Harrison Ford, etc.) are Episodes 4, 5, 6. The Roman numerals on the sides of the cases are the Episode numbers. Example: V is "The Empire Strikes Back" Currently, the original three (the last three episodes) are available separately or in box set form.

Episodes 1, 2, 3 are the ones that were just in theatres (Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was in theatres in Summer 2005).

If you were planning to buy the films for your friend, I would suggest getting all six in Widescreen format (it'll be marked on the cases). For the "original" three films (IV-VI), get the new limited edition 2-disc editions. They have the theatrical and special editions (he'll understand the difference).

Here are links from DVD Empire for image references (get them at Wal-Mart for cheaper):

However, here's the thing...if he's a Star Wars fan, chances are very good that he already owns these discs, so you may have to go for something else. If he's into collectibles, there's an entire wealth of products out there.

UPDATE (ANSWERING YOUR FOLLOW-UP QUESTION):

"Knights of the Old Republic" is not a DVD. It's a video game for the X-Box and/or PC. "Clone Wars Volume One" and "Clone Wars Volume Two" are the only complete TV series DVDs available at this time (new TV series are currently in development).

Avoid the box set for 4,5,&6. They recently came out with better copies of each of the original three movies. A box set of 1,2,&3 is a good idea. Note, box sets offer bonus discs but the new discs offer variable formats.

at the Hallmark store they have some great ornaments with the star wars characters on them. If the person has a favorite character you could go to a toy store and get them a toy model as a joke. There is also a number of novels about star wars at barnes and noble bookstore.

Movies are great, but if they are a Star Wars fan, I bet they have them already. Buy them a lightsaber. I got one and I love it.
They are metal handles, crafted to look like them, with a long tube of neon lights that can be turned on or off with the sound effects....You can get them in almost any style in the movies....try your local movie store or Amazon.com or Ebay.
Dont spend too much...around $120 or so.
