to have the heads shaved is normal...it assures that no warpage has occured and insures a good seal for the head to engine gasket so you don't have more problems down the road...inexpensive and neccessary...have it done and happy motoring.

If your heads were leaking there is a possibility that the heads may be warped (especially with aluminum, as in the lumina and most newer cars for that matter.) You don't, necessarily, have to have the heads machined, but you should check them. You want to be sure that the mating surfaces are true and angled correctly. Otherwise, no gasket will fix the leak.

Any time that you take the head off of a car, I would suggest taking it to a machine shop. They check it for warping and for cracking. If the head is cracked, you will be looking to replace it. If the warping is within tolerance, they can machine the heads and make them flat again.
If you replace the head gasket without machining the heads and they are warped, you risk having a repeat failure. Personally, I know that removing the heads on these cars is not an easy task and I would rather do it correctly the first time.
Also, when replacing the head gasket, make sure you replace the head bolts. These are called torque to yield bolts. They are designed to stretch. Re-using them will cause incorrect torque and damage may occur.

As Colin T says, they may be waiting for the warranty company to respond or they may have sent the head off for planing. They're not going to be too keen to work on it when more lucrative jobs are coming in the door, but 2 weeks is getting silly. Time to go in and ask exactly what the delay is. It usually pays to do this when there are other customers there who can overhear what you're saying. Please ignore the more crass answers on here, anyone who says he can do a head gasket properly in under 2 hours is a bodger and there is no Rover Group, there hasn't been for years.

If the engine overheated, it's always wise to get it shaved or you are asking for future head gasket problems.

They will need to be shaved so they are smooth and the gasket will fit more flush. This will almost guarantee there will be no more leaks. Good Luck..

No,just have to scrape off the old gasket and get it real clean so the new gasket will seal properly.

They only need shaved if your car got severley overheated and warped the heads. You can bring the heads into most auto shops and they will be able to tell you if they got warped.

Shave if it's warped. Excessive material removed increases compression which can be either a good or bad thing.
