I have a Nano, my daughter has the video Ipod, my husband has the regular Ipod, and my youngest daughter has a shuffle. So . . .yep . . . we're an i-Pod family.
Dowloading songs: It's simple. Even my 9-year-old does it herself. If you download a cd, you just pop your cd in the cd player of your computer, and it saves it into your Ipod library. Then you drag the songs from the library into your Ipod list.
Is it free?: Yes, if you're just downloading songs from CDs. If you buy them from I-tunes, they're 99 cents each or $9.99 for an album.
We couldn't live without ours. Seriously. LOVE THEM.

You download the songs off of the software called itunes that comes with it- you can also download it offline from the apple website. The songs normally cost .99. You can also use more illegal programs such as limewire or acquisition to download the songs and whole albums for free- really easy. ipod is for sure the way to go- consumer reports just compared it to other mp3 players, and nothing compared. Have fun with your new ipod!

I have a 60GB Video iPod... :D
You can download songs from iTunes which cost about $1 or so, each. To download songs, you have to sign up for and iTunes account, in which you'll have to give personal information for billing purposes. They won't bill you though, until you select something.
The only songs you'd get for free is the ones you transfer to iTunes yourself. Either by importing a CD, or downloading free songs from LimeWire like I do. And also, like everyday there is a featured song, in which you can download for free. But as stated before, you need to have an iTunes account set up, even though you won't be billed for the free song.
Hope this information helped. Email me if you'd like to know more.

you first download itunes from the apple website, then you cand download songs from there, the songs cost 99 cents. Downloading the songs is pretty easy if you use itunes. You can buy itunes cards, so that you dont have to pay from your credit card, which i personally think is nice. I love my ipods, they're great and i'm glad i got one.

those are all questions i wondered about before i got my ipod, but its half the fun to try and work out an ipod and how to use it on your on. but anyway the ipod has a cable that connects to your computer, you install a program [itunes] on it and put all your songs into itunes and it will upload all the songs to your ipod. If you want to buy new songs, itunes has a store where u can buy most songs for $1.69
