Its been an issue since the 1970s and im sure even earlier then that if they actually had to make laws against it.

Bush has enough things to worry about without people blaming him for things he didn't even start.

The following is the history of each state's gay marriage laws going back to the 1970s and in some states being voted on as much as 5 times(most are recent, between 1998 and 2006).

Many people are also apparently unaware that the 1973 Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which would have made women equal, was struck down for two reasons:
1. Society couldn't stomach women in combat, and
2. It opened the door to gay rights.

Why do people assume women are equal?

And, I think liberals have given Bush god status, not conservatives.

Eh, people like to use it as a hot button issue. But the issue has gone cold. The majority of the people have voice their opinion in their state elections, and its now banned (in most states). Bush had nothing to do with it either way.

Some people have an unnatural obsession with this issue. It's banned nearly every state. Can we please move on to a real problem? GWB has used the issue at every opportunity to pander to religious whack jobs to prove his piety. Apparently being anti-gay equals deep religious convictions in some voters' minds. He may not have invented the issue but he's certainly not above milking it for all it's worth.

What the blazes do you mean he didn't start it? On National TV he was lobbying for a Federal Law banning gay marriage, the first major politician to do so. He stepped into it, willingly. You are right about him having more important things to do like getting ready for his impeachment trial.

It's just an ongoing debate that flares up into public awareness from time to time. The ascendancy of the religious right has made it a hot button issue lately

I think they blame him because he is the first president to publicly state being against it.

Believe it or not, the President's views on push-button topics carries a lot of weight.

Great. How many more times will we have to ban legal recognition of gay relationships to make you freaks happy?
