the best place to put any thermometer is near the filtration system. reason for this is all the water travels to that spot sooner or later and you can keep a better all around temp in the tank making it a better environment for the fish. and if you can get a better thermometer. digital are the best.

Mount the top of the thermometer one inch below the water line at the top of the side glass toward the front edge of the tank. That way it is not on the front of the tank blocking your view and you can still see it easily.

Heat rises in water just as it does in air, so the warmest water will be at the top of your tank. This is where you should measure the temp.

The warmer the water is, the less oxygen it will hold and the fish will have difficulty breathing. So heat your tank to the optimum temp for the species you keep. The lower part of the tank may be a bit cooler but that is OK. It is better to be a degree or two cooler than too warm.

I have found outside thermometers not very accurate. They react to the room temp as well as the tank. But if you have good water circulation then location is not that critical. If the water does not circulate very much then near the top will give you a warmer reading then near the bottom of the tank.
I have used both inside and outside thermometers on tanks from 5 to 55 gals.

if you have top-dwelling fish you may want to put it on the top b/c that is where the fish will be most of the time. vis/versa for bottom-dwelling fish
