Males have the long flowing fins and brilliant colors that owners find attractive, and are what is usually sold in shops. Females are drabber and have short rather stubby fins. It is not always easy to find females for sale in pet shops.

do not listen to these people, females can be just as colorful and beautiful. I have a tank of 8 females. 2 are a bright blue, one is turquoise, one is a deep red, two are white with either red or turquoise in them and two are red and blue. however the females have much shorter tails than what people think of the males having, but you can get males with shorter tails. so how you can tell is females are much fatter and have bellies that look like they are bulging. males are longer and thinner. males also have a "beard" which is how they puff out. for more specifics check out http://www.bettatalk.com/how_to_sex_bettas.htm

Let go the two fishes in an aquarium...look at their movement, if the fish swim together, the front is a gal and the one at the back is a boy, but if they move apart maybe both are gal or both are boy....I guess..

The male is more flamboyant with the most beautiful colors under the rainbow. Knowing this will keep you from putting two males together.

They say that if the fish is colorful with bright colors it's a boy. The girls are usually plain and not colorful.

The females don't have the beautiful flowing tails. The males are the real beauties--colourful, with big tails.
