Everyone outside of Detroit thinks of Detroit as the town where they rioted after the 84 World Series and the whole Devils Night fire thing. But whenever someone makes a reference or a joke - Detroit natives get upset. Yet ever year there's yet another incident of overzealous fans getting too involved and committing crimes because of their "passion"

Think of the fans that circled the Lakers' hotel during the 2004 Finals blowing horns until cops chased them away. Then there was the fans coming onto the court during the brawl. Most recently was the classless booing of Joey Harrington during the Thanksgiving game against the Lions - instigated by the Stadium crew.

I think the only reason there was no riot after the 2004 finals was because of the media storm that brewed after Jimmy Kimmel made that riot joke.

So what gives? Isn't this like Eagles fans complaining if someone says they boo injuries to opposing players?

Horrendous behavior... There was a riot 22 YEARS ago. What about the riots in Denver & Montreal when they won the Stanley Cup? What about the riot in Boston when they won the World Series? There have been riots in Vancouver, Seattle, Calgary... plenty of other places more recently? What about the Rodney King riots? All over the country, but not Detroit. Yet, the down & out city gets treated like it happens every night.

" the whole Devils Night fire thing" was a sad time, but it was 3 or 4 years and a long time ago... It turned out a lot of those fires were insurance schemes by "suburban" property owners as well as citizens, along with sickos who enjoy setting fires. Does the west get typecast for the wildfires started by pyros?

As far as the honking the horns, that was stupid & silly... but ultimately harmless.

Joey Blueskies took a lot of the blame for the Lions stinking, when it SHOULD be obvious that the problem is Ford. Should he have been booed? Well, when he left, he said a lot of bad things about Detroit in the media because of the way he was treated... I guess the fans were telling HIM what they thought, not the media.

As far as the "Brawl at The Palace," one idiot threw a beer and the Pacers ran into the stands. THAT is what caused the whole thing. ONE GUY! I guess everyone should be held to the level of the worst person in the crowd.

Of course you think the only reason there was no riot was because of Kimmel, you don't know anything about Detroit other than what you read in the Media.

What about the fact that the World Series went without a hitch... except for the awful scores? lol
What about the Superbowl?
What about the 3 Stanley Cups and 3 NBA Chamionships without a bunch of problems?

It's easy to pick on a city that is on hard times and it's easy to pick on people who are seeing their jobs going overseas. How about looking at the last... 20 YEARS.

We would NEVER boo an injured player here, except Claude Lemieux.

Probably because of questions just like this that lamely attempt to make Detroit a scapegoat. You make it sound like Detroit is the only place that has ever had drunk and over exuberant fans.

Sorry to say son, but it happens EVERYWHERE. And no, there are not incidents "every year" in Detroit.

Here's just some of the many incidents that DID NOT happen in Detroit.

What about in Columbus this month after their victory over Michigan.
What about New York in October where the Tigers were forced to move hotel rooms and kept up all night before the last ALDS game in New York?
How about in Denver when they won the Super Bowls in the 90's or those Stanley Cups?
What about the Oakland Raiders riot in 2003?
What about Stanley Cups riots in Vancouver in the 90's?
How about riots at MSU in 99?
What about Disco Demolition night and the Chicago White Sox fans?
Or the Nickel Beer Brawl in Cleveland
I seem to remember some kind of rioting after a Boston Red Sox baseball series recently too.

I'm sure some folks can think of more.

you have not somewhat pronounced something to back up your thought. Why do you think of Detroit has the worst followers? in my opinion I disagree, and no, i don't stay in Detroit or everywhere in Michigan. there are particularly some real followers available hoping for the final for their team, particular there are some band wagoners yet i'm particular various different communities get the suitable comparable variety of fake followers too. I even have by no ability heard very own memories of rude Wings followers...the only memories of followers like that have been Pittsburgh followers yet returned, not particularly everyone seems to be rude or aggressive. working example, a number of my very ultimate friends are Pittsburgh followers and that they are super human beings, in certainty my sister's fiance is a Pens fan and he's an fantastic guy. So do not bypass around making generalizations approximately particularly everyone.

i could go into detail but I'm going to make it really simple and direct,

us being Detroitier's are proud, proud of our city, and what it has become( Detroit isn't all slums, that's mainly behind Henry ford hospital, between 7 mile fenkell, Vandyke, and gratiot, and the southern tip of the new center area/ Mexican town) the reason we get mad is because of the belligerence of others whom group us together with other belligerent detroiters ( no offense, not talking to you) not every Detroit sports fan is a complete dusche bag,ya know, then we start to riot be-cause 1. our sense of humor is dilute by the harsh winter's and 2. every one groups our city for he negatives, not the positives, so with our diluted sense of humor an short tempers as someone mentioned earlier we get mad at any and practically every thing that involves Detroit in a negative way,

don't ask me how this is so , it just is,

(lets go Detroit lets go)

sincerely Richard S., a detroiter

I'm a detroit native (currently residing elsewhere) and I don't get offended. Belligerence is part of the city's culture. I've seen far worse sports fans in Philly and New York (try the upper tier at MSG during a Rangers game - people wearing opposing jerseys are frequently assaulted and doused with beverages)

Because the truth is, that this place really is a dump.
It hurts when people say something about our behavior, because it just seems to be part of an entire negative connotation about detroit and detroiters, that we just can't seem to shake

HA. Yeah, Detroit fans are the only sports fans that get out of control. PLEASE. Nothing too interesting happens here, so all you non-Detroiters hear about is the bad things that happen.

Detroit fans have a short fuse because they know that, win or lose, they still live in Detroit.
