I agree with the general 1946 start date and by way of rather obvious explanation for the name, there was indeed a boom in the birthrate when soldiers returned from WW2. It was so noticeable that at my school there were two academic years with two classes in each year (i.e. all normal years have one class) covering the 1946 and 1947 birthdates.
P.S. I'm a boomer, born in 1949 and my sister was born in 1948

The Baby Boom years are 1946 -1960 - check out Ask.com for info on statistics during those years...baby boom resulted from US WWII success - positive feelings, lots of jobs, home owner ship ...families just seemed to have lots of kids...and remember most moms stayed home during those years so child care costs were not an issue

IWilliam Strauss and Neil Howe, in their book Generations, include those conceived by soldiers on leave during the war, putting the generation's birth years at 1943 to 1960.

The oldest were born in 1946 and the youngest 1964 and I don't know why it was that way.

1945 was the start year BECAUSE the World War II ended (and those soldiers came home to their wives and started makin' lots of babies)
1965 was the end because they invented the PILL then.

it usually refers to the sudden increase in births afer world war 2 in 1945 when soldiers returned from overseas... ppl born around 1945 and later up til the late 1950s, who are now reaching senior citizen status, like my parents who were born in 1945 and 46
hope this helps :)
