Does anyone know why the producers/writers chose for Monica and Chandler to be together on Friends?

Besides things like the fact that a new couple would create and further interest in the show etc

I was just wondering why those two characters in particular were chosen to be together - the writers got it right ---> they make such a great couple

My guess is that it was because they were such total opposites, in a way. Monica could control Chandler, almost absolutely and he was okay with that. The winning thing was an edge too. It made sense to put them together and it all started from a happy accident. No matter, the writers got it on the money with that merger. I always figured they would put Joey and Rachel together...got that one wrong, didn't I? Good question. Nana

The writers had done everything they could with Ross and Rachel - they had to pair another couple. Even though, everyone loved the Monica/Chandler pairing - I didn't think they were interesting as a couple and Monica annoyed me every single second they overkilled the joke that she a neat freak competitive former fatty. The writers probably rolled a six-sided die with the characters names and just went with it. I think a Chandler-Rachel pairing would have been more interesting.

I guess it was to take the focus of Ross & rachel for a while, I think alot of people were becoming bored with Ross & rachel but loved the Intwined love story between the friends and Monica And Chandler were two people who were completelty different and putting them together as seen as a shock.. It worked well.

Because they were the least likely couple. People are always interested in seeing whether or not a perfect mismatch would make it to the end. Take Grey's Anatomy for instance. Now that i know Karev and Addison might be starting a relationship, I find that more interesting that Grey and McWhat's-his-face.
