Because for many centuries people and goverments have tried to base to entire belief on a christian ideal.....Sometimes people agreed with this and other times they were forced to believe it.
All the old historians from the years after The Christ was born were christians and many were priest...........It's like asking why are there so many streets named after (yuck)Ronald Reagan...It's simply because powerful people chose to do this to honor him and his message...

It's just a convention of the Gregorian calendar! The year is totally arbitrary. In fact, it's pretty well accepted that Jesus was born B.C. (Wikipedia pegs his birth between 8-2 B.C. which is what I've heard elsewhere too.)

They're not in all societies. The Islamic calendar, for example, is measured from the time of Mohammed's first revelation. basically, it's an honor given to somebody who is very well respected.

some philosopher/intelluatual guy after Christ set the standard...he was off by about 6 years though.....

Because the people who came up with the calendar we use thought of Jesus as the pivotal figure in history.

Our western calender was formalized by a pope...therefor it gets the religious overtone
