The United States is not a confederation. There is no chance that Alaska will secede successfully. The President would federalize the National Guard in a split second, thus neutralizing any military power Alaska would have. Check the Civil War. It didn't work then when 11 states did it and it won't work now if one state tries it.

If they left, they would have no economic base. Existing oil companies that operate in Alaska would have to renegotiate contracts that would not be in Alaska's interest. Alaska would have no military defense (other than the cold), so expect the first invasion during summer. And let's not forget the hippy infestation.

We're giving them a billion to build a bridge to no where. Why would they leave to join Canada or Russia.

What you ask is not a crazy question. There is a large portion of the population that wants independence from the US government. I doubt it will happen, but it's not impossible.
