When I first installed Vista on both of my computers, I usually ran my main computer under XP Pro to have access to all my software. At this time I have my main computer using XP Pro and my secondary running Vista. I have shared files between the two systems frequently, but as of late neither system will recognize the other system in the network. Has anything been changed in recent updates? This week I formatted and reinstalled both systems and still can't get either system to recognize the other computer on the network.

I've taken both computers back to XP. Formating them both at the same time. I attempted to build the network after installing my base drivers to no avail, made sure they were both updated to sp2, still with the same problem. I've got printer and file sharing on, on both computers, and I have attempted to change the settings under the firewall from the subnet to each computer’s IP to no avail, so I have turned it back to the subnet scope, on both computers. I have also tried it without any firewall on at all with no results. I do use AVG, but I have also turned that off just to check, and it still made no difference. I have shared a couple of folders on each PC, and have yet to be able to find either computer with the other one. The only thing I can find on either computer when I go to Map Network Drive it the computer I'm looking on.

I usually do not say this because I hear it so much as a miracle cure for computer problems but if it is possible I would do a system restore on both of them since they offer a restore point on many installation.

Is it a problem of file sharing, or windows firewall or have you installed a software that might block some ports?

You have to enable "File and Printer Sharing" as an exception in the windows firewall.

it could be as simple as the network cable going bad, or the wrong type of cable. is it a crossover? also, when you're looking at the computers on the network, try pressing F5 a few times.
