Bad information from the guy above...
According the the Walt Disney World website January is a time of lowest attendance, meaning less crowds. It certainly isn't anywhere near the worst time to go. Right after New Year's the crowds die down a lot right up until President's Day, or so.
"Although special events and promotions may influence Theme Park attendance levels, the following list highlights historic attendance trends throughout the year:
Lowest Attendance: January (except New Year's Day) until just prior to Presidents' week in February
The week following Labor Day until just prior to Thanksgiving week
The week following Thanksgiving until the week prior to Christmas
Moderate Attendance: After Presidents' week in February through early March
Late April through early June (except Memorial Day weekend)
The first part of Thanksgiving week
Highest Attendance: Presidents' week in February
Mid-March through Late April ("Spring Break")
Memorial Day weekend
Mid-June through Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day and weekend
Christmas week through New Year's Day
During regular attendance periods the Theme Parks tend to be the busiest on the following days:
Magic Kingdom® Park: Monday, Thursday, and Saturday
Epcot®: Tuesday and Friday
Disney-MGM Studios: Sunday and Wednesday
Disney's Animal Kingdom® Theme Park: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday"
Hope I could help! Have a great vacation and good luck in the marathon if you're participating!

I have friends running in that marathon and 1/2 marathon and they'll be there at the same time that you are. I'm a season pass holder since Jun 2005 and I've been several times over the last year and a half. I'll tell you what I told them...
It's going to be BUSY on December 31st and January 1st. Avoid the four parks on those days. Spend New Years Eve at the Downtown Disney area. It's going to be crowded there but that's where the party will be and unless you buy an $89 special New Years Eve ticket to get into Pleasure Island, you won't have to pay to be there. On January 1st, head over to Citywalk at Universal Studios. It's also free and has several restaurants, bars, & shops you can check out.
On 2 Jan, the crowds at the Disney parks will die down exponentially and you should have minimal crowds and short lines in all the parks. Jan 3rd, 4th, & 5th will probably have some of the smallest crowds of the year at Disney World. It's one of the best times to go.
Good Luck in the marathon. Run hard & have fun!

Disney World is crowded all the time now by design,in the past the high season would support the low season but not anymore.Costs are high year round so revenue must be high year round.
They have built several low price hotels and offer a free ride from the airport to Disney to get people to stay at Disney and never leave. They have a ticket program which lowers the price the longer you stay, they make up for it by overcharging for everything else.
You knew it was low season in the past because there were fewer obese people around but this year it has been packed with fat people. The new system does not "plus the show" it creates unmagic moments.I have the ability to come and go depending on how I like the crowds and the best season now is having the ability to escape.

It can be crowded. I know several people who miss some school in August to go to Disney (I live in Florida) I normally don't go until Fall (September, October, November) because it's cooler and less crowded. It'll be very hot, and crowded, but you might be going on a day where it is not so crowded. Have fun!

It will still be busy until about the 4th of January. You'll still be dealing with holiday and new years crowds. Avoid any theme park on a weekend, and when you do visit them, start at the back of the park and work your way forward.

Seaworld is open late to accomidate the crowds. If you want to get by in line faster go to the farthest right turnstyles becuase every one goes to the first one becuase thats the first they see. The park also has extra staff to make sure every guest can be accomidated.

Dude, the BUSIEST time of the year... trust me. I am a annual pass holder... I go about 5 times per year.
The waits for rides at Disney can be 2 hours or more if you dont have a fastpass.
It's a madhouse.
Good luck with that!
