I would suggest going to local council/commission meetings in your community and getting well-versed in what issues are important in your community. Go to political action events, get involved in political campaigns, volunteer at the local Chamber of Commerce or tourism bureau (they'd love to have you). In a few years, you might consider running for office! Depending on the size of your community, it could probably be something you can do while still keeping a full time job... (Take note, however, all elected officials are on call AROUND the clock. It is hardly a part time gig...)
You might also consider talking to some local politicians whom you admire or whose politics you agree with. Ask them how you may be of assistance in their re-election or election efforts...
