And lets face it nice deep rich moist fruit cake is good......stale dry old fruit cake not so good......But my neigherbor down the street used to give us one every year that she bought on sale the last year....soaked in rum...now thats moist :)

RE:
Why do comedians make jokes about fruitcake at Christmas?
I like fruitcake.
I love fruitcake.
What's wrong with fruitcake?
Also, what's happened to the fruitcakes in stores?
Even if you can find a store that sells them, they're smaller and smaller, not like the big ones that used to come packed in large round metal cans.

Yes, yes, I love fruitcake, my Mother makes the best. I remember answering fruitcake questions, it means the year has slipped away again, it is too soon for this, lets not start with Christmas questions yet, I feel panic creeping in.

There is a place in Corsicana Texas that makes the best fruitcakes and they ship them all around the world. I think note I said think that it's called the Collins Street Bakery. As far as comedians making jokes about fruitcakes that's been going on for years and years.

The word 'fruitcake' is funny. I like fruitcake too, though it's a bit rich, but if you want to find some, you may need to go to a specialty store. Google 'fruitcake'. Maybe find a recipe and make some.
Merry Christmas!

I don't care for it because of the actual fruit used but here is something for ya! A little different but I can handle this one!
Merry Christmas
FRESH FRUITCAKE
2 medium oranges
3 medium cooking apples
2 ripe medium sized bananas
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups of sugar
1/4 pound of butter, softened
3 cups of all purpose flour
1 tablespoon of baking powder
2 teaspoons of baking soda
3/4 cup of golden raisins
3/4 cup of finely chopped walnuts
Cut each orange, including the rind, into 8 sections. Remove and discard seeds. Chop orange finely in a food processor, blender or grinder.
Set aside in a 2 quart bowl. Repeat chopping with cored and cut apples, peeled if desired. Combine apples with oranges. Peel bananas, puree or mash and mix with other fruits.
Beat eggs in a large mixer bowl. Add sugar gradually, beating until mixture is thick and smooth. Beat in butter. Add fruits.
In a 1 quart container, stir or shake flour with baking powder and baking soda. Beat flour mixture into fruit mixture. Stir in raisins and walnuts. Nut pieces should be small enough not to interfere with slicing.
Turn batter into 2 (9 x 5 x 3 inch) loaf pans that have been greased and floured. Bake at 350ºF. for 1 hour or until cake tests done.
Let cool on rack before slicing. Serve plain or topped with a glaze of confectioners' sugar and orange juice.
Makes 2 loaves 10 to 12 servings each

It's because they are no longer a favorite thing to eat for most people. And that's why they come in smaller packages. BTW I love fruitcake.

I love fruitcake too.
But to be honest you're the only other person that I know that has admitted to liking it. I don't know why.
Nuts and fruit and cake - what's not to like?
I enjoy Claxton fruit cakes and those are the rectangular-type that come wrapped in plastic, not in a can. Let me know what brand comes in large round metal cans and I'll give them a try!
One good thing about being the only person that usually likes it is that I don't have to share :-)

I like it too but it seems to be funny for some reason. Like using it for a doorstop etc. Maybe because the good homemade stuff will last months if properly stored. I wish I had my great gramma's recipe. She aged it in a tin for months & would soak some booze into it every now & then. Maybe the booze kept it from going bad? Store bought cakes are nothing like the old fashioned home made ones.

They used to be a lot more popular and was the food of choice to give. Unfortunately the old store bought ones were often quite inedible, really nasty tasting and smelling. hence they became the butt of so many jokes. Used to see a lot of the old cheap fruitcakes in the stores every christmas, but I guess the companies finally gave up--I don't recall seeing any of them anywhere the last few days. I only recall one, a homemade one, that I ate that was eatable.
