Actually, while the other answers are probably what your teacher was looking for, your mistake may have been due to the ambiguity of her wording.
There's a reason we use parenthesis in math - to make it clear what the order of operations should be, because y + 3^2 is different than (y + 3)^2. Her statement could be read both ways, and taken literally, your answer is correct. Take the question to another math teacher in your school, and ask them if it seems ambiguous to them - if they say yes, take it up with your teacher.

The word "quantity" is a key word in the problem. It tells you that you are squaring the quantity of y plus 3. That is why it is (y + 3)^2 and not y + 3^2

(y+3)^2 . you know you should really be doing this yourself. but here is the answer. the way you had it first 3 would be squared. the "quantity" refers to y+3 being in ( ). that means that first you do y+3. then square the answer. just so you are clear on why you were wrong.
