I have 2 computers that I want to link together so my buddy and I can play against each other in a couple games that I have. (The internet will not be used to play against each other) What type of cable would I use to connect the 2 computers?

Both computers will at least need network cards. If you have at least that much, then all you need is a crossover cable. Just plug one end into each PC.

If you also have a router/switch/hub, then you will need two standard cat-5 cables, not a crossover. Plug one end of each cable into the router/hub/switch, and one end into each PC.

Then, just make sure each PC has a different IP address and the same subnet mask. Like this...

PC1:
192.168.1.1
255.255.255.0

PC2:
192.168.1.2
255.255.255.0
