cut slits into the paper so that you can overlap smoothly

Does it have to be wrapped? Do you want it unwrapped, eventually?

Wrapping: take a square of wrapping paper -- one side of the square should be able to fit all the way around the sphere, and you have a little left over. Use a tape measure to measure the circumference, and add an inch (2.5 cm.). Put the sphere in the center. Starting with one corner, gently fold inward and pull up. Do with the middle of the next side. Do with the corner, then the side, etc. until you have worked your way around to the starting corner. Gather all the paper to the top, and tie with a string or ribbon -- the left over paper should "blossom" out of the top, kind of like a pineapple.

You could also do the "candy" wrapping method, where you put the sphere in the middle of a rectangle of wrapping paper, roll it up, and gently twist both ends so it looks like a piece of old fashioned candy -- tie with ribbons to secure.

If you don't have to unwrap the sphere again, you can glue on bits and pieces in a pleasing mosaic, OR you can cut pieces the shape of a beach ball segment, and glue those on.

Hope that helps.

How To Wrap A Ball

How big is the ball? If it will fit, cut a section of the cardboard tube from a gift wrap roll then wrap the section of tube like a big Christmas cracker....trying the ends with ribbon.

Put it in a box and then wrap it. If not that wrap it up like a piece of candy, you know, with the things you pull on each side. Sorta like this:
