If you look at the sides of the outlet you will notice that there are two different colors of metal on either side.

The silver side is for the WHITE wire which is Neutral
The gold side is for the BLACK wire which is the HOT wire.

Be carefull while working with the wires and make sure that the breaker is OFF for that circuit. And have someone with you while working on it.

You will also want to GROUND the outlet with the BARE copper wire to the grounding screw (Green) on the lower portion of the outlet... (If your wiring has an existing GROUND wire)

Email me if you have additional questions :)

Rule of thumb in wiring: if you don't know, don't do it. New outlets will have a ground screw, a copper colored screw, and a silver colored screw. No way I'm telling you what color wire to put where because it's possible your hot wire is a different color than the standard. Get a tester from the harware store, determine what wire is hot, and attach it to the proper screw. I'm not saying which one as it sounds like you shouldn't be messing with this stuff anyway. When you describe the length of the connections and not the colors it leads me to believe you may want to get some hands on help.

if this is a wall outlet where you plug in a light or something , the black wires goes to the brassey looking screw white goes to the silver one,
If it is a plug where that is attached to something to use the electricity, you put the black on the prong that woudl go into the short opening,
Be more specific if this don;t help

WOW! A lot of interesting answeres to say the least.
The rule of thumb is "white always goes to the high side".
In otherwords, it goes to the side of the outlet that accepts the wider prong and the black goes to the narrow prong side.

Go to Yahoo search, type electrical wiring, the first one is a faq that has more than enough info. Please don't do electrical work without research and don't take chances.

Generally speaking, the white wire goes to the nickle coloured terminal or screw and the black wire goes to brass coloured terminal........... sort of like white to white and Black (B) to Brass(B).
Good luck !
