Do a lot of reading. "A Witch Alone" by Marion Greene might be a good start for you. Buckland's "Big Blue Book" of Witchcraft might be another book you'd find useful.

There are also tons of sites online relating to witchcraft. http://www.witchvox.com comes immediately to mind.

Not all witches are the same - while we all use magic, there are wide differences in philosophical, ethical, and religious aspects depending on the path we follow. How someone who practices Voudon will look at witchcraft a lot differently than someone who practices Wicca, and both will look at witchcraft differently than someone who practices Thelema, for example.

You don't just 'become' a witch (if, by 'witch', you mean like in the Wiccan tradition); there is no specific training you do and then say 'Yup, I'm a witch now.'. We all have the capacity within us; it's just a matter of acknowledging your ability to manipulate the world around you through tapping into energies and using thought and spellcraft.

Some people might offer to 'train' you, and some might make a big deal about 'initiation ceremonies' and all that junk, but you don't need it- those are just props to make people feel special and 'real'.

Read some good books on the subject and start doing things on your own and looking at the world the way Wiccans do, and you'll be a witch. I suggest:

1) "Spinning Spells, Weaving Wonders"- the most fantastic book out there, in my opinion. I keep it near and dear to my heart.

2) "Sacred Space" by Denise Linn- also a good one, less strictly Wiccan, and more just spiritual in a pagan sense.

3) "Book of Shadows" by Phyllis Currot- truely inspiring, every time, for me.

4) Any of the 'witch' books by Terry Pratchett (try 'Wyrd Sisters', 'Equal Rites', 'The Wee Free Men' or 'A Hat Full of Sky')- yes, they're fiction, but I think all witches and aspiring witches should read them, because they are the essence of what we should be.

5) Anything by Silver Ravenwolf. It's somewhat glamorized, but a great introduction.

Good luck!

In some ways like the way you become a Christian, but I garentee no Witch Evangelist in a pointed black hat is gonna head for you're door.

Actually, you can also forget the pointed black hat.

Witches believe, if you are meant for the craft, it will find you.

It's not a religion where followers belief they should just go up and deliberately disturb someone's life path, just to suit they're own whims or ideas.

They do not have a belief that you are going to go somewhere you don't want to go, like hell, if "you" do not follow there "beliefs".

If you are meant for this path, the Lord and Lady, or God and Goddess, whichever, will just somehow lead you.

Consider how you feel about nature? Do you feel a greater calling there? Like something "completes you", not to borrow a line off of Tom Cruise's character, that is.

There is a wealth of books besides. It once was a life or death thing, to keep the old ways hidden.

Now it is considered more important to make the old ways available to those who seek, given where we are at on this planet right now.

Everyone does magick all the time without realizing it.
Mages are those who try to be aware of it, and learn how to do it purposefully, more effectively, with more repeatability.
Witches are Mages who recognize great power and effectiveness in aspects of nature, and who thus involve these in their works of magick.

Read "Real Magic" by PEI Bonewitz, and then anything by Raven Grimassi, and Starhawk.
Go to witchvox, and send e-mails to people explaining your research, and ask them how they became witches.

Well to tell you the truth there is no such thing as a "witch". Christians threw that name at Pagans/Druids. Research Pagans and you could possible become one. They're are still Pagans in our society trying to survive. They have many great festivals like Yule or Winter Solstice that any interested person such as yourself would enjoy!
