Self employed generally means that you own your own business. A regular businessman is just someone who works at any business.

You can be self employed as a sole trader or you can set up a company and get paid as a director of that company. Tax is never easy and it depends on which way you want to get set up. Basically you should start as a sole trader as that is easiest to manage and understand. You have to pay tax on your income and that will be either at normal tax rates or possibly at a higher rate. You can of set expenses against your income. I have not heard of companies taking tax out of your payments, if you are self employed then you are responsible for paying your tax. Setting up a company has more obligations and more complicated rules, you will need a good accountant in either case but a Company will reduce your tax payments but your accountants bills will be higher and there is more work involved in running a company even if you are the only worker.

I don't really know of any difference, unless one could argue that a businessman could also be an employee.
Well, it appears that people are making that argument, but I still maintain that the vast majority of the time a "businessman" is used in reference to someone who OWNS A BUSINESS.
