I've a twisted sense of humor, an appreciation for irony, and a fairly sentimental soul. But whenever my missus turns on the tube, it's always these god-awful, super-sacharrine, syrupy made-for-TV flicks either on The Hallmark Channel or similar tripe. The kind where you can predict the ending within the first 10 minutes of the movie, complete with the stereotypical plot devices such as the terminally ill wife or child, the disgruntled person who gave up on Santa/Jesus/power-of-love/etc, and the angelic intervention that will save Christmas in the nick of time.

I mean, if you can stomach that stuff, you're a tougher hombre than me. But for the more jaded and gritty types, any thing you'd recommend?

This list is my personal favorites for the helliday season (misspelling intentional):

Love Actually - Sentimental without stupidity. I love the ending.

Elf - Will Farrell and Bob Newhart...what could be better?

The Christmas Story - You'll shoot your eye out!

It's a Wonderful Life - Yeah, it has schmaltz aplenty but the innocence of the time in which it was made comes singing through. I still cry and I'm a dyed in the wool cynic.

How the Grinch Stoled Christmas - If all else fails, play the Whoville drinking game. Take a shot whenever the word 'Who' is said. You'll be so plastered by the end of the feast you won't care!

Hope this helps.

A Christmas Story - the one with the kid who wants a bb gun for Christmas but his mother says it'll put his eye out - it looks like a kiddy type film, but it's absolutely hilarious, and it's not sappy either. In one of the first scenes the mom is disgusted with the dad because he has a lamp in the shape of a woman's leg with a lampshade on top that he puts in the window for the holidays every year!

You do know that's what you'll get out of most Holiday movies? try White Christmas it's old and you might be able to predict some stuff but it's worth a try. Danny Kaye is great in this movie.
